Health: Crack Bones?

When people crack their knuckles, they aren't actually cracking the bones at all. The spaces in between the bones are filled with stuff to keep the bones from rubbing against each other (because that would really hurt...it's called arthritis).

There is cartilage and fluid among other things in the space between the bones, and we call that space a joint. Sometimes we can apply force to the joints by pushing on our fingers in a certain way. The "pop" you hear is a result of the stuff in the joint being pulled out of place a little bit.

Some people say that if you continue to pop your knuckles that you will get arthritis, but so far, that has not been proven to be true. However, popping your knuckles does put a strain on some of the muscles in the hand you do it a lot, and sometimes that can lead to pain in the hand.
